When Joanna Drayton, a free-thinking white woman, and black doctor John Prentice become engaged, they travel to San Francisco to meet her parents. Matt Drayton and his wife Christina are wealthy liberals who must confront the latent racism the coming marriage arouses. Also attending the Draytons' dinner are Prentice's parents, who vehemently disapprove of the relationship.
The film was groundbreaking because it was the first film of the era to cast a positive light on an inter-racial marriage. The film was also controversial; inter-racial marriage had been illegal in most of the United States until only a few weeks before its release, when, in June 1967, anti-miscegenation laws that promoted racial segregation were declared illegal by the Supreme Court. This timing made the film incredibly relevant to its audience.
Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.
No outside food or beverages are permitted.
