As expected, the schedule is Covid-dependent. The Temple and the Sunrise will continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated as best we can.
ABOUT THE PLAY: Although the play is set in a fictional Louisiana parish, the story and relationships of the women have universal appeal. Steel Magnolias debuted off-Broadway in 1987 and has been performed around the globe including the UK, Ireland, France, Japan, Poland, and Sweden. In 1988 the play was adapted for film starring Dolly Parton, Shirley McClain, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, and Julia Roberts who received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
The name Steel Magnolias perfectly describes the group of women who are tough as steel yet as delicate as magnolia blossoms. Set in an in-home beauty parlor over a three-year period, the play highlights the conflict between the characters and their ability to remain loyal friends through it all.
Shelby is a spirited young woman and new bride who wants to have a child despite the health risks for her. M’Lynn is Shelby’s supportive mother who worries about her choices and their risks. The outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice in her beauty parlor, the gathering place where gossip and friendship are shared. Annelle is Truvy’s assistant and a shy, gawky newcomer hoping for a fresh start but maybe taking it a little too far. Clairee is the town’s former first lady with a raging sweet tooth. Ouiser is the group’s curmudgeon who explains "I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years".
Steel Magnolias at the Sunrise is a production of the Temple Theatre. After performing the play in Sanford, Producing Artistic Director Peggy Taphorn will move the entire production onto the Sunrise stage for three shows with the same set, actors, and complete performance. Temple Theatre produces high quality, professional live theater and Steel Magnolias was selected as their first collaboration with the Sunrise.
